How UNIQ Fashion Redefined My Expectations for Fine Jewelry
By James Whitmore, Founder of Whitmore Fine Jewelry (New York)
The Preconception
When my colleague at Tiffany’s mentioned UNIQ Fashion as a potential supplier, I’ll admit I was skeptical. “A fashion jewelry manufacturer doing fine jewelry?” I thought. Their reputation for high-quality costume pieces was solid, but my brand deals in sterling silver and 14K gold – territory where most fashion jewelry factories fall short.
Still, the rave reviews made me curious enough to test them with one simple design: our 2025 Hope Ring (925 silver with a signature wishbone motif).
The Revelation
From the first prototype, UNIQ shattered my assumptions:
Unexpected Attention to Detail:
Precision Casting: No porosity in the silver – a common issue I’ve faced with other suppliers
Edge Polishing: Rounded interior edges for comfort, something even some luxury brands overlook
Hallmarking: Crisp, clean stamps in exactly the specified position
Technical Surprises:
Their laser welding technique eliminated solder marks at connection points
Proposed a reinforced shank design that reduced warping risk
Delivered mirror polishing that rivaled my usual Italian workshops
The Business Impact
That initial order of 300 pieces:
Sold out in 6 weeks at our Madison Avenue boutique
Earned a feature in Vogue’s “New Silver Stars” editorial
Prompted 47 custom order requests for variations
Most telling? My master jeweler couldn’t distinguish UNIQ’s production from our usual European-made samples in blind tests.
Moving Forward
We’re now developing:
An expanded Hope Collection in both silver and 14K gold
A new Art Deco-inspired line leveraging UNIQ’s stone-setting capabilities
